Ushuaia, the capital of the Argentinean part of Tierra del Fuego, is detached from the mainland by the Strait of Magellan and lies on the northern bank of the Beagle Channel, 3.000 km away from Buenos Aires. With over 60.000 inhabitants Ushuaia may rightly claim to be the southernmost city of the world (merely some Chilean outposts are situated more southern than that). The tourism concept of Ushuaia as the borderland of the inhabited world, and gateway to the Antarctic, works quite successfully.

In 2007 the 1st "Biennial of the End of the World" (Bienal del Fin del Mundo) took place in Ushuaia and its surroundings as a contribution to the International Polar Year.
