Review of Dak'Art 2010
Looking back, facing forward? The 9th Biennial of Contemporary African Art in Dakar. Including photos. By Jelle Bouwhuis & Kerstin Winking Placed under the care of the Ministry of Culture and Francophonie of the Senegalese Republic, Dak'Art has the objectives of: Supporting and encouraging creativity, promotion, diffusion, artistic training and art education in Africa; promoting the African artists internationally; encouraging the integration of the contemporary African Art into the international Art market, and contributing to the development of art criticism in Africa and publications on art and contemporary African artists. Dak'Art 2010 will take place from 7 May until 7 June 2010, featuring as main events:
International Exhibition:
- recent works of prize winners of Président Léopold S. Senghor award from editions 1992 - 2008. - artists chosen by 5 curators from the aprox. 300 applications of an open application. The final selection includes 25 artists representative of the 5 areas of the African continent and 10 prize winners of former editions.
Meetings: 8 - 11 May, two presentations each morning.
Design : Instead of the design show, a day of reflection about design is proposed. This day will prepare the return of design exhibitions in 2012.
Digital arts : Within the framework of projects in partnership.
OFF exhibitions: Parallel exhibitions in Dakar and in other cities of the country, particularly in Saint-Louis, for 350th anniversary of the city.
Biennale's Village: The Village of the Biennale, a public success in 2008, will welcome with conviviality "biennalists" in the heart of the IFAN Museum.
2012 in prospect: Dak'Art 2010 will launch the great Biennale "of the 20 years". The General curator for 2012 will be presented, and also 20 partners for the 20 years of the Biennale.
