The Yokohama Triennale has been initiated with the 1st edition in 2001, to mark the start of the new millennium. In its Organizing Committee are represented the Japan Foundation, the city of Yokohama, the Japan Public Broadcasting Corporation (NHK), and the Asahi Shimbun newspaper.

While showcasing newly-released artworks of the cutting-edge contemporary art around the globe, the Triennale also features site-specific works highlighting the distinctive charms of the port city of Yokohama.

A variety of symposiums, workshops, and other events are held in conjunction with the exhibitions, to enhance the dialogue among the artists, participants, and the visitors.
